BEST STARGAZING SPOTS IN AFRICA
As the world develops and grows, sometimes we forget appreciate the mystery and beauty of the night sky.
Especially when mixed tall buildings, pollution, overcrowding and the city lights. Africa is one of the best destinations to view the constellations aligning in the sky. In today’s post we have mentioned some of the best spots for stargazing in Africa, Southern Africa in Particular.
1. Suntherland – South Africa
Based in the Karoo outside of Cape Town, Sutherland is home to the largest single optical Telescope in the Southern Hemisphere as well as being known to be one of the best spots worldwide for stargazing. If you are staying in or near the area we advise you pay the area a visit and see the wonders of the sky’s in the night and look into the Universe.
2. Sossusvlei Desert – Namibia
Found in the Southern part of the Namib Dessert (which is referred to the worlds oldest desert, being around for 43 millions years plus/minus). The area offers a multitude of stargazing opportunities, with the sky’s being predominately clear, with no light pollution to interfere with the overall experience. This is truly one of the best spots for stargazing in Southern Africa, as well as the world.
Dark-Sky Association has certified The Sossusvlei Dessert as one of its Dark Sky Reserves, due to the amazing starry night.
3. The Tuli Block – Botswana
Wedged between Zimabwe in the north and east and South Africa in the South. Another great spot within Southern Africa for stargazing is The Tuli Block based by Botswana’s eastern border, Tuli Block is home to one of the best views of the constellations in the world. September is the best time to visit Tuli Block for stargazing, as on a clear night viewers can see constellations such as Pleiades star cluster/Seven Sisters and Orion
The area is also home to various natural wonders such as the the Shashe and Limpopo rivers connecting, down to the Notwane river. Other noticeable wonders of the area include the Red sand of the Tuli area, Solomons Wall and much more.
4. Victoria Falls – Zimbabwe
A town in Zimbabwe which is the gateway to a massive waterfall of the same name (Victoria Falls), with the waterfall being found on the Zambezi River. Due to the areas clear skies and low level of light pollution it is one of the best places on the planet for stargazing into the African night sky and the cosmos.
The Victoria Falls Safari Club offers free stargazing to its guests, truly making it one of the best spots for stargazing in Africa and the world.
5. Jao Camp – Botswana
Another amazing spot found in Botswana located on the border of the Moremi Reserve in the Okavango Delta, set amongst islands fringed with riverine forests and vast floodplains with varied wildlife, with the main attraction being the sleepout deck. With polished wood floors, mosquito nets, and an amazing view to the sky’s, the deck is artistically simple and views of the beautiful surroundings take main focus.
